textiles in art therapy
Textiles have a long and varied history that is traditionally viewed through domestic and utilitarian lenses. Over the past 8 years, I have developed a keen interest in integrating fiber and textile art processes into my personal art practice and professional work as an art therapist. I am curious how textile art processes can be used as an intentional and responsive therapeutic media in art therapy. Preliminary research and qualitative data indicate that textile artmaking can support self-regulation and tactile processing by cultivating actions of repetitive and rhythmic movement. A connection between somatic awareness and emotional regulation can be cultivated through the “grounding quality of textile making” (Collier, 2011, p. 100). Using textiles in art therapy also offers opportunities for sensory integration (the process of organizing sensory input from the body and environment) and supports the processing of personal narratives and experiences.
If you are curious about using such techniques as sewing, stitching, weaving, or felting as a therapeutic process, let’s chat!
